Moonstone

Also called adularia, Mukdahan (Thai), rainbow moonstone (labradorite feldspar)

Moonstone is a feldspar with a soft floating glow called adularescence, and the Romans are said to have thought it was made of moonlight. Today people treat it as a stone of intuition, new beginnings and the feminine cycle, and use it in moon rituals.

Time15 minutes on the new moon

Tonight's moon is read when the page loads.

The working

  1. On the night of the new moon, light the candle and set the moonstone in the dish in front of it.
  2. Tilt the stone in the candlelight until the blue-white glow slides across its surface, and watch it for a minute.
  3. Write three intentions for the coming month on a fresh notebook page and date it.
  4. Hold the moonstone over the page and read the intentions aloud.
  5. Snuff the candle and wear or carry the stone during the month, or keep it on the notebook.
  6. At the next full moon, reread the page and note what has begun to grow.

Take care: Moonstone is fairly soft (6 to 6.5) and has easy cleavage, so a hard knock can split it; take rings off for heavy work. Never leave the candle burning unattended.

i

Solid moonlight

Roman belief as reported in gem histories · Antiquity

Gem histories say the Romans admired moonstone because they believed it formed from solidified moonlight, and that Greeks and Romans linked it to their moon goddesses. Later writers also said its glow changed with the phases of the moon.

Sacred stone and wedding gift

South Asian custom as reported by jewellers · traditional

Jewellers often write that moonstone is sacred in India and given at weddings for harmony. The claim is widely repeated, but no early written source for it has been confirmed here, so read it as living trade lore.

Art Nouveau moon jewels

French and British decorative arts · c. 1890 to 1910

Moonstone was a favourite of Art Nouveau jewellers, and Rene Lalique and others set it in flowing, nature-based designs where its glow suggested water and mist. In 1970 Florida named moonstone its state gem to honour the Moon landings, though it does not occur there naturally.

History

Moonstone is a feldspar in which orthoclase and albite separate into thin alternating layers as the mineral cools. Light scattering between layers about half a micron thick produces adularescence, the bluish glow that seems to float under the surface. The common orthoclase form, adularia, is named for Mount Adular in Switzerland. The most prized blue stones historically came from Myanmar, and most commercial moonstone today comes from Sri Lanka and India. In Thailand it shares its name with Mukdahan province on the Mekong.

Gem histories say the Romans believed moonstone was solid moonlight, and that it was linked with lunar goddesses. It flourished in Art Nouveau jewellery around 1900, and Florida made it the state gem in 1970. Modern crystal practice treats moonstone as a stone of intuition, cycles and new starts. Crystal healing has no scientific support: in a 1999 Goldsmiths experiment by Christopher French and colleagues, volunteers holding fake crystals reported the same sensations as those holding real quartz. Rainbow moonstone is actually a white labradorite, and opalite glass is often sold as moonstone; the glass glows evenly from every angle, while real moonstone shows its sheen only at certain tilts.
