The First Drive

A simple ritual you can do alone the first time you drive a new car alone — to mark the threshold, to claim the vehicle as yours, and to set the intention for everything it will carry you toward.

What You'll Need

  • A single song that means something to you
  • A short list (mental or written) of three places you want this car to take you
  • A small object from your previous car (if there was one) — anything: a fortune from a fortune cookie, a guitar pick, a piece of sea glass from the ashtray

The Working

  1. Sit in the driver's seat. Don't start the car yet. Place the small object somewhere in the new vehicle — glove box, console, under the seat. It's the bridge between the cars.
  2. Speak aloud the three places: 'I will drive you to ___. I will drive you to ___. I will drive you to ___.' These can be specific (Mom's house) or vast (the ocean). Both are right.
  3. Start the car. Cue up your song. Let the first thirty seconds play with you not moving — just listening, with the engine running.
  4. Pull out of the driveway. Drive nowhere in particular for fifteen minutes. The first drive should be aimless — that way the car learns you, and you learn it, with no pressure of a destination.
  5. When you come home, park, turn off the engine, and sit through the rest of the song before getting out.

From here on, every drive is just a drive. But the first one was a working — and the car will remember it for as long as you have it.
