The Sitting Quiet

A practice for actually hearing what something — or someone — is trying to tell you. Most often we don't hear because we don't sit. This is a working for those moments when you need to listen better, to a car or a person or yourself.

What You'll Need

A timer (your phone is fine)
A pen and paper
Nothing else — no music, no scrolling, no second activity

The Working

Sit in the driver's seat of the vehicle — engine off, doors closed.
Set the timer for ten minutes. Put the phone face-down or in a pocket.
Close your eyes. Listen. Cars settle, creak, pop as they cool. The seat shifts. A bird outside. Your own breath. Don't try to identify anything — just hear it all.
When the timer ends, open your eyes. Without thinking, write down three things on the paper: one sound, one feeling, one word.
Look at the three. They are what your car (or your situation) is telling you. Don't analyze. Just notice.

Do this once before any major repair decision. Do it before buying a car. Do it the first time a new symptom appears. The answers are usually already there, beneath the noise of being busy.
