The Green Candle Money Spell

Also called money drawing candle, green candle spell, prosperity candle

A green candle is dressed with oil and herbs, marked with what you need, and burned over coins to draw money. It is a 20th-century form that grew out of Hoodoo and mail-order candle magic, now common in modern witchcraft.

The working

  1. On paper, write the amount or purpose you need, kept honest and specific, such as rent or a raise.
  2. Carve the amount or a dollar sign into the candle with the pin.
  3. Rub a little oil on the candle from the top down to the middle and from the bottom up to the middle, or stroke it toward you, to draw money in.
  4. Roll it lightly in the cinnamon and bay. Use only a light dusting; heavy herbs catch fire.
  5. Fold the paper toward you, set it on the dish with the coins around it, and stand the candle on top in a holder.
  6. Light it and say your need aloud, then think of one practical step you will take this week toward it.
  7. Let it burn down while you stay in the room. Keep the coins in your wallet afterward.

Take care: Never leave a burning candle unattended; herbs on wax can flare. Use a fire-safe dish and keep it away from curtains. A spell is no substitute for budgeting or financial help.

Versions across time and place

i

Mail-order candle burning

American spiritual supply trade · 1940s

Booklets by Henri Gamache and Mikhail Strabo set out colour meanings and altar layouts, and their green-for-money rule spread through mail-order shops. Candles were dressed, set on altars and moved closer to a target candle day by day.

Uses: green altar candles, dressing oil

Recorded in: Henri Gamache, The Master Book of Candle Burning (1942); Lucky Mojo, 'Candle Magic'
ii

Lodestone and candle

Hoodoo · 20th century

A green candle is burned beside a lodestone fed with magnetic sand, so the stone 'pulls' money as the candle works. The lodestone is kept and fed afterwards.

Uses: lodestone, magnetic sand, green candle

Recorded in: catherine yronwode, Lucky Mojo Curio Co., 'Money Spells'
iii

Seven-day money candle

Hoodoo and Latin American botánica practice · 1970s onward

A glass-encased seven-day candle is dressed through holes poked in the top and burned over a week, often with a petition beneath it. The glass makes long burning safer.

Uses: green glass candle

Recorded in: Lucky Mojo, 'Candle Magic'

History

Candles were used in European Christian devotion for centuries, but the 'colour plus purpose' money candle is a fairly modern form. Lucky Mojo's history of candle magic notes that figural candles appeared by the 1930s, and that the booklets of Mikhail Strabo (from 1941) and Henri Gamache's Master Book of Candle Burning (1942) shaped how American practitioners dressed and arranged candles. Green became the money colour, matching the colour of US paper currency.

Hoodoo workers added oils, herbs and petitions, and the custom of stroking oil toward oneself to draw something near. From the 1970s glass-encased candles became common in botánicas and spiritual shops. Modern witchcraft took up the green candle and paired it with planetary days, especially Thursday for Jupiter. It is honest to call it a 20th-century spell with older roots, not an ancient rite.
