Catholic novena veladora
Printed jars of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Saint Jude or the Sacred Heart are lit for a nine-day prayer, the novena. Many households keep one burning before a home altar during illness or a family crisis.
Also called 7 day candle, novena candle, vigil candle, veladora, glass-encased candle
A seven-day candle is a tall candle poured into a glass jar that burns for about a week, used for novenas, prayers to saints and Hoodoo or botánica petitions. The glass makes a long, steady burn possible and gives room for printed prayers or a personal label.

Take care: Glass can crack from heat near the end of the burn; stand the candle in a metal tray or sink, never on wood or near curtains, and keep oil and herbs to a few drops so the top does not flare. Do not leave it burning while you are out or asleep.

Spiritual workers 'fix' plain or labelled vigils with condition oils, herbs and glitter and burn them for clients on church or shop altars. The glass is read afterward for signs.
A plain wax cylinder slides out of a reusable glass sleeve so the worker can carve and dress the candle like a free-standing one, then slide it back. It mixes the safety of glass with the hands-on dressing of a taper.
Long-burning candles before holy images are an old Catholic practice, seen in sanctuary lamps and votive lights before saints. The modern printed jar is a twentieth-century American product. Texas Monthly profiled Reed Candle Company of San Antonio, whose founder ran a West Side grocery and, in 1937, began filling jelly jars with wax himself, later adding silk-screened colour, images and prayers. Reed became one of the country's largest makers of religious candles and was bought in 2017 by Veladoras Místicas of Nuevo León.
Botánicas in Latino neighbourhoods, and Hoodoo supply shops in Black Southern and northern cities, sold the same glass candles for different purposes: saints, Hoodoo conditions like Road Opener, and Spiritualist church work. Practitioners added personal touches by dressing the top with oil and herbs. In the 2010s and 2020s designers began printing celebrities on prayer candles, a playful offshoot that museums such as The Henry Ford have collected.

Candle magic means choosing a candle by colour, dressing it with oil and herbs, stating a clear wish, and letting it burn down while you hold the intention. It is the most common working technique in modern folk magic and the base for hundreds of other spells.
An altar is a small dedicated surface holding candles, symbols of the elements and objects meaningful to you, used as the focus for prayer and spellwork. This guide covers the Wiccan layout and simple personal altars, and where the greeting 'blessed be' comes from.
