Rose Quartz

Also called love stone, pink quartz

Rose quartz is pale pink quartz. In modern crystal practice it is the love stone, used for self-kindness, healing after heartbreak and drawing affection; that meaning is mostly 20th-century, though people have carved and worn pink quartz for thousands of years.

The working

  1. On a Friday evening, set the candle in front of the mirror and scatter a few rose petals around it if you have them.
  2. Light the candle and hold the rose quartz against your chest for a few breaths.
  3. Look at yourself in the mirror and say three kind, true things about yourself, out loud.
  4. Say what kind of love you want more of: from friends, from a partner, or from yourself.
  5. Snuff the candle and carry the stone in a pocket or keep it on your bedside table for the week.
  6. When you notice the stone, treat it as a cue to be gentle with yourself or to reach out to someone you care about.

Take care: Never leave a lit candle unattended near mirrors, curtains or petals. Keep small stones away from young children, who can swallow them.

Versions across time and place

i

Ancient beads and seals

Mesopotamian, Assyrian and Roman craft · Antiquity

The GIA reports rose quartz beads from ancient Mesopotamia and jewellery made by the Assyrians around 800 to 600 BCE, and says Romans used it for seals. These dates come from gem-trade summaries rather than cited excavation reports, so treat them as approximate.

Aphrodite and Adonis

Modern retelling of Greek myth · modern

Crystal books tell how Aphrodite cut herself on a briar rushing to the dying Adonis and their blood stained white quartz pink. Ancient poets tie Adonis's death to anemones and roses, not quartz, so the stone version is a modern addition.

Heart on the pillow

Modern crystal practice · late 20th century to present

A small rose quartz heart is placed under the pillow or by the bed after a breakup or to invite new love. It is now the single most common love working with stones.

History

Rose quartz is massive quartz tinted pink by microscopic fibres of a mineral related to dumortierite. It rarely forms clear crystals, so it is usually carved into beads, spheres and hearts. The Gemological Institute of America says rose quartz beads have been found in ancient Mesopotamia, that the Assyrians made jewellery from it around 800 to 600 BCE, and that Romans used it for seals; Egyptians are said to have believed it kept the skin young. Most fine material today comes from Brazil and Madagascar.

The title love stone belongs to modern crystal practice, which spread from the 1970s and 1980s. The tale that Aphrodite's blood turned quartz pink is a modern retelling; ancient sources tie that scene to roses. Today people use rose quartz for self-love, healing a broken heart and calm. Crystal healing has no scientific support: in a 1999 Goldsmiths experiment by Christopher French and colleagues, volunteers holding fake crystals reported the same sensations as those holding real quartz. Rose quartz can fade in strong sun, and very bright pink tumbled stones are sometimes dyed quartz or glass.
